Super stressful and incredibly engaging. I probably can rant about the neoliberal lens a lot of it can come off as endorsing, but that’s overshadowed by the simple fact that it shows how systemic factors conspire to maintain the status quo(a la The Wire).

I had distinct memories of reading this in class roughly a decade ago, with a couple sequences sticking out for no clear reason I remembered the exact wording, and I gotta say this rules. Not sure what particular aspect of it hit me correctly, but it probably has something to do with the only semi-plausible reality it takes place in. Great dystopia because it has more to say than “say wouldn’t it be fucked up if we were in a authoritarian theocracy”. Very glad to have rediscovered this :)
