Grand Media Log: Day 21

Wild Strawberries

Written and Directed by Ingmar Bergman

Film

Return of the funny Swede himself! This is the first of his films thus far in this box set that truly feels in direct conversation with his works that I had seen preeviously, Seventh Seal and Persona, and he comes out firing on all cylinders. It has your existentialism, monologues, very strong performances, ruminations on human connection, memory, and the list goes on and on. Due to the particular lens through which this film explores these themes, dream logic and aging, I didn’t have the experience to fully comment on but the other stuff was truly done justice. Before I go too far in my praises I have to state taht some of the story telling choices rubbed me the wrong way in the moment but my fears were assuaged after reaching the touching conclusion. I don’t know what i’m saying no one reads these.

East of West

Written by Jonathan Hickman, Art by Nick Dragotta

Comic Ongoing Series

I loved this comic and it sticks the landing damn well. Art rules and there are definitely some stand out formalistic flourishes that truly elevated the series that I don’t wanna get into at the moment. Everything about this was up my alley and it was great to see it end satisfactoryily on every level. Truly special stuff. Shout out Death for being such a badass. Fuck Archibald he’s so evil I wanna hit him but so does everyone it’s all good.

Playing Suzerain and it’s good but lottttta reading. I will make the goddamn Radical paper happy even if my country goes down in flames.
