Grand Media Log: Day 17
Ford vs Ferrari
Directed by James Mangold, Written by Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Jason Keller
Film
I am horrified by cars and find the obsession with them, even as a status symbol, entirely alien. That being said this movie rocks. Christian Bale as always gives a stand out performance, and the rest of the cast does an admirable job keeping up. The races were exciting and filmed interestingly, even putting me on the edge of my seat to a certain extent which rarely happens in the slightest. Super glad I listened to my dads nod towards this, I never would’ve seen it otherwise.
Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions
Edwin Abbott
Novella
Always haaving heard of this in more of the science-fiction/mathematical sense, I was surprised just how much of this slim volume was devoted explicitly to its satire. While dated in many respects – I can’t with confidence state that the degree of misogyny of the society depicted is being condemned – there is a solid clear satirical core in there. This coupled with the very interesting mathematics and science fiction explored via the Flat-, Line-, Point- and Space-lander’s and how their material conditions not only impact their physical forms, but their interpretation of their preceptions. Quite great stuff that was a treat to go through after deliberating on much of this ground in my own time. And again it ties back into satirical elements in a very nice way. The drawings were a nice touch too.
Don’t feel like doing the big header thing for East of West Volume 2 but it’s still very interesting and I’m enjoying it a lot. I’m not sure why it exists but it’s a good thing that it does
Oh yeah I played Scrabble with my family tonight and I acheived a personal best of 287, and I didn’t know where else to mention it.
